Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) is a specialized field that involves the maintenance, repair, and certification of aircraft. An AME is a licensed professional authorized by DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) to carry out and certify aircraft maintenance. AMEs ensure that aircraft are airworthy and safe for operation, performing inspections, repairs, and maintenance on various aircraft systems including engines, airframes, and avionics.

To be eligible for AME course, candidates must have completed 10+2 (12th standard) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) from a recognized board. The minimum aggregate marks required is usually 50% in PCM. Some institutes also accept candidates with a 3-year diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, or Electronics Engineering. Additionally, candidates must meet the age requirements (typically 16-28 years) and pass the medical examination as per DGCA standards.

The AME course duration is typically 3 years, divided into theoretical training (2.5 years) and practical training (6 months). After completing the course, students need to pass DGCA examinations to obtain the AME license. The total time to become a licensed AME can vary, but generally takes 3-4 years including the training period and obtaining the necessary experience.

AME licenses are categorized as follows:

• Category A: Basic Aircraft Maintenance License
• Category B1.1: Aeroplanes Turbine
• Category B1.2: Aeroplanes Piston
• Category B1.3: Helicopter Turbine
• Category B1.4: Helicopter Piston
• Category B2: Avionics

The fee structure for AME courses varies depending on the institute and location. Generally, the course fees range from ₹3-8 lakhs for the entire 3-year program. Government institutes typically charge lower fees (₹2-4 lakhs), while private DGCA-approved institutes may charge higher fees (₹5-10 lakhs). The fees usually include theoretical training, practical training, examination fees, and study materials. Many institutes also offer scholarships and education loan facilities.

After completing AME course and obtaining the license, graduates can work as Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers in various sectors:

• Airlines (Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Vistara, etc.)
• Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) organizations
• Airports and ground handling services
• Aircraft manufacturing companies
• Aviation training institutes
